Location, Location, Location

Where does your novel take place? How is it significant to the time period? How does it impact the novel? How does it impact the characters? Could the novel have taken place anywhere or is it dependent upon this location? Why or why not?

Matilda Bone takes place on Blood and Bone Alley which is not a real place but is signifigant to the time period. It is important because it it where most of the medicinal treatment takes place. Leeching, bonesetting, and other fantastical variatons on curing disease like rotten eggs as a love potion or rubbing saliva to heal ailments were believed in medieval times. Blood and Bone Alley supports the time period by giving these treatments.

My novel starts out in London, England, but then moves to the titanic where it all takes place. This is a significant time period because the titanic is in the middle of the Artic ocean, and it is frezzing outside. This means that it is character vs. nature story. This impacts the novel because if the titanic wasent in the middle of the Artic, and it was frezzing, and if the Titanic didnt sink there wouldnt be a story! No this novel couldnt have taken place just anywhere. Since it took place in the Artic thats what makes the story. If it took place in the Picific ocean or the Atlantic ocean bacause it is not cold, and there is no glaciers. So the titanic wouldnt have sank and there wouldnt be a story or climax. So the whole idea of the character vs. nature and there wouldnt be a story!

The book Or Give Me Death starts off in Williamsburg and ends up in New Jersey. A family during the war hires a slave which takes care of them while Ann Henry's mother Sarah is slowly loosing her mind and going crazy. Its is significant to the time period because today there is no slavery and times were really different in the 1800's then they are today. No the novel couldn't of taken place in any other time because slavery does not occur today and there is some medication people can take for that sort of illness and i am pretty sure there was rarely any medication back then.

My book is called "Elizabeth I Red Rose of the House of Tudor." My novel takes place in England(the Tudor family have palaces that they visit all over England). Elizabeth is the daughter of King Henry VIII. I don't think the novel could have taken place anywhere else because King Henry is an English king. If he were a Scotish king, then there would most likely be different events, especially since the Scotish and the English weren't very friendly at the time.

My novel ( The royal diaries of Kristina- The girl King) takes place in Stockholm, Sweden in 1638. The location is significate to the time period because at this time in Sweden there were lots of wars going on in so her father had to go to war alot and when he died Kristina was only 10 and already a King. After he died Kristina moved alot in between castles when living with her mom to living with her aunt. This novel could have been taken in other European Monarchy times but not in the modern time like this century. Also the book could have taken place in other countries like Germany where her mother came from or any where else as long as it's not modern time.

My story, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, shows the struggle of a family who work hard for little. The location is placed in Brooklyn, New York in the early 1900's. This location is important to this time period because this area had very little money. This situation still applies to numerous areas in the country and around the world.

the book shadows on the sea takes place in winter haven, maine durong world war II. this location is significant to the time period becuase during world war II the ocean around maine was surrounded by tons of german u-boat submarines. these u-boats used messanger pidgeons to communicate with german agents on the american shores which causes the whole plot and story to take place.

My book, "Letters from a Slave Boy" by Mary E. Lyons, is about a boy who was born into slavery due to his mother, Harriet, being a slave. Once he turns about 12 years old, he travels to Boston, Massachusette in order to live with his mom and his sister, Lulu. Later in the book, he travels to California, Australia, and North Carolina.

My book: ANASTASIA THE LAST GRAND DUCHESS takes place in Russia. She is part of the "imperial family" so she lives in many different palaces and travels a lot. How ever when her father declares war a lot of that changes. For example, most of the people of Russia don't think that he was right to help out Serbia when Germany was giving them trouble so they don't travel as much any more for fear of assassination attempts. Also Anastasia's mother was born in Germany and she has a lot of influence over Russia. Due to this a lot of Russians believe she is a spy and should be kicked out of Russia, at least during the war.

The fact that my book "Crispin" is located in England in 1377 has a huge impact on the story. This book is about a peasant boy on the run for his life. This was in the Middle Ages and I think that if this story took place in a setting like China in 1377, the story would be completely different.

My book takes place in the heart of new york city right before the turn of the century (1899). This is a time when alot of people were lower class. This drives most of the events frm this story.Finn A 12 year old kid has to sell newspapers after school to help his family make a living. This could have taken place in chicago but New York City was perfect.

My historical fiction book, "Mine Eyes Have Seen", takes place in North Eastern United States, such as Massachusetts, Maryland, and New York. In this time, most of the northern states were against slavery. By Annie Brown and her family living in this area, they are in less danger than they would be in the south, where slavery was an important business. Annie Brown's father helped with escaping slaves and if their family lived in the south, the slave owners would not approve of his beliefs. The location impacts the characters more than the novel itself. So far in the book, I don't think the novel could have taken place just anywhere. In the United States, slavery had the biggest impact on the east coast in the 1800's. The setting of the novel would be much different if the location had been different.

My book The Kite Fighters takes place in Seoul Korea in 1473. My book is significant to this location and time by in this book kite flying competitions are a part of the culture and custom of Korea. This impacts the novel by if it wasn't this location kite flying wouldn't really be a part of the characters life. In a different place kite flying competitions would not be a big deal and not considered one of the biggest events happening like it is in Seoul Korea. Also the location where the characters Kee-sup and Young-sup fly thier kites is ideal because it's on a hill where they could get a lot of wind to pick the kite up.

My novel, Number The Stars, takes place in Dennmark. This is significant to the time period because at this point, the Germans had control over many countries, including Dennmark. The Germans had soldiers stationed in these countries to make sure that no one escaped, and their rules were being followed. Also, many Jewish people were living in Dennmark. This period was during WWI and WWII. The Germans started to take the Jewish's property and rights away. For example, the stores that were being run by Jewish families were closed and the families weren't allowed to open another business. Eventually the German soldiers began to capture the Jewish families and not let them live in Dennmark anymore. Some of the main characters in the story were a family of three Jewish people. The family has to try and make it to Sweden with the help of their friends, where the German soldiers weren't stationed. This put both families in danger. Number The Stars had to take place in Dennmark. If it hadn't taken place here the surcumstances involving the Germans would have been different. There may have been less soldiers or even none at all. Plus, at this time, the Germans were watching Dennmark carefully because there were known to be alot of Jewish people there. It was alot harder to escape from Dennmark than some of the other countries that were having some of the same issues.

The fact that my book "Crispin" is located in England in 1377 has a huge impact on the story. 1377 was in a time period called the middle ages. In England they had a type of government called Feudalism. This means they have a King, nobles Priests then commons and finally the peasants. Crispin is a young 13-year-old peasant boy and is charged with a crime that he didn't commit. Now he is sentenced to die and he is on the run for his life. I think that if this story was located in a place like China in 1377, then the story would be completely different.

My book takes place on Fenwick Island Delaware in the middle 1800s.
This affects the characters because the location being on Fenwick Island they have to be in charge of the lighthouse. Also this was during the civil war so many states around them like Georgia are leaving the union.

In my book "The Journal of Rufus Rowe" the main character Rufus Rowe runs away from his home because of problems with his step father. He ran to the town of Bowling Green,Virinia becuase he knew that he mother would know where he went. He ended up getting a job there working on a farm there for a place to sleep. Since hse lived in the south he supported the Confedrates. A couple weeks after he started working in Bowling Green a Baltoon of Confedrates came to so-call defend the town. When the owner of the farm Rufus Rowe was working at saw this they decided to leave the town. When this happened Mr.Rufus made friends with the soldiers. The Whipping Boy takes place in a castle. It is significant to the time period because the time period is in the early 1700's and castles existed in the early 1700's. It impacts the characters because in the early 1700's there were kings, prince’s and peasants and in The Whipping Boy there is a king a prince and servants so it impacts the characters because kings, princes, and servants live in castles and were alive during the 1700's. No The Whipping Boy couldn't of taken any where else because it is dependent upon it's location in a castle because that’s where kings live it wouldn’t be right if the location was in a regular house so it is dependent upon it's location

My book, "A Drowned Maiden’s Hair" takes place in England. It starts out in an orphanage called The Barbary Asylum for Female Orphans. Then the setting transfers to the Hawthorne Grove home to the people who adopted her. This is significantTo her because if she wouldn't have been in that orphanage she wouldn't have been adopted by those people who so far, are improving her life. This story could have occured somewhere else because the only event that made it occur here was the thing that the girls mother dropped her off at that certain orphanage.

My novel takes place in Bradford Corners, Tennessee. This novel is significant to the time period because how they talk and how things are ran in Tennessee so Nellie and her family went to Tennessee because people were being lynched if they were in the NAACP. This impacts the novel because it creates tension with wanting to be in the NAACP but you have to be in the NAACP secretly. This impacts the characters by them having to start a new life in Chicago and meet new people. This novel has to take place in this location because in other places you could be apart of the NAACP with out having to keep it a secrete.

My book takes place in Europe. The exact location isn't stated in the book. It is about a Jewish girl who lives during War World II. This is also the time in which The Holocaust is happening. This definitely effects her in a large way, because of this, her family is faced with a challenge. Whether to leave or stay at there house. This is very hard for them to decide also because, their father was just murdered by a Nazi.

My book, Milkweed, takes place in Warsaw, during the 1900's. Nazi's roam around everywhere while you jus mind your own business. Jew a young boy (no he isn’t a Jew) it’s funny i know. In chapter 6 he gets stopped by a Nazi during a parade. He gets caught trying to run through the crowed because Jew Uri and some of there friends were playing a game. When the Nazi caught him he asked if he was a Jew and said well that’s good to know. It was really good not to be a Jew at that time because if you were then you would probably have to go to concentration camp, so he jus said that he was a Gypsy (That was the name that the boys in the stable called him because they didn’t hate him as much as Jewish people.
